Staley nació y crió en la ciudad de Nueva York, y literalmente dejó su huella y tuvo una etiqueta de afloramiento de la ciudad en todo el municipio. El hijo del comerciante de fotografía innovador Etheleen Staley y el difunto historiador de arte Allen Staley, que trabajó como carpintero cuando era joven para apoyar su práctica de estudio, ganando una comisión para diseñar y construir una boutique. «Cuanto más construyo, más me doy cuenta de que es lo que debo hacer, y esa es una oportunidad real para la expresión creativa», explicó Staley. «Todavía tengo pinturas y esculturas, pero creo que la cabaña parte de mi práctica artística».
