Meta Blocks Virginia Woolf Play Ads As Feminism Triggers ‘Social Topics’ Filter

Meta has blocked paid Facebook and Instagram ads for Teatre Raval’s Barcelona production of Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own. The campaign was classified as involving social issues, elections or politics under Meta’s EU advertising restrictions, leaving the theater unsure whether references to feminism, Woolf or other language triggered the decision. While its organic posts remain online, Teatre Raval has refused to remove the production’s feminist themes simply to secure paid promotion. The episode raises questions about how broad advertising rules and automated moderation can affect cultural works whose themes overlap with issues Meta considers political or social.
