X has introduced X Numbers, private codes that let users receive calls and messages through X Chat without sharing their personal phone numbers. The codes can allow selected people to make contact even when they do not follow the recipient or would normally encounter a closed inbox. Conversations started through an X Number go directly to the recipient’s inbox instead of message requests. Users can refresh or disable their codes if they become too widely shared. The feature adds another privacy option to X Chat while fitting into Elon Musk’s wider ambition to turn X into an “everything app”.
