THE BATMAN RETURNS BATMOBILE GOES UNDER THE HAMMER
One of Gotham City’s most recognizable pieces of machinery is leaving the cave. Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies are putting the screen-used Hero Batmobile from Tim Burton’s Batman Returns up for auction on November 23, 2026, marking the first time this particular car has crossed the auction block. Built for the 1992 film starring Michael Keaton, the vehicle carries an estimate of $5 million to $7 million — presumably without Alfred included.
The car served as the primary Hero Batmobile during filming and has been screen-matched to the majority of the movie’s driving sequences. Stretching 19 feet 8 inches — just under six meters — its elongated black silhouette helped define Burton’s expressionist version of Gotham, combining automotive engineering with something closer to moving set design.

TWO CHEVROLET IMPALAS BECOME ONE GOTHAM MACHINE
Beneath the theatrical bodywork is a surprisingly conventional American foundation. Custom builder Carl Casper and his team constructed the Batmobile around a frame created by joining two Chevrolet Impala chassis, then fitted it with a Chevrolet V8 engine and three-speed automatic transmission. The long proportions are wrapped in a sculpted fiberglass body finished in the glossy black familiar from the film.
Its design exaggerates almost every automotive gesture available: a turbine-like intake dominates the nose, sweeping bodywork runs towards oversized rear fins, and the cabin sits low within the car’s almost architectural profile. The aesthetic continued the Batmobile language established for Burton’s 1989 Batman, developed under production designer Anton Furst, turning the superhero vehicle into something between Art Deco fantasy, jet aircraft and very impractical daily driver.

A SCREEN-USED BATMOBILE WITH A $5–7 MILLION ESTIMATE
Following production, the Hero Batmobile appeared at the film’s premiere and wrap party before spending years in storage and later going on display at California’s Marconi Automotive Museum. Unlike many static movie props, the vehicle was built as an operational car, with its mechanical components hidden beneath the exaggerated proportions demanded by the screen.
Julien’s Auctions estimates that the Batmobile will sell for between $5 million and $7 million when bidding takes place in Los Angeles and online. The wider Ultimate Batmobile Auction will also include costumes, props, production artifacts and memorabilia spanning six decades of Batman film and television history. The timing coincides with the 60th anniversary of the 1966 Batman television series, although this particular lot makes a fairly convincing case that subtlety was never Gotham’s strongest automotive principle.
